This is the personal blog of me, Bill Parker. I currently spend my working life in the West Country, where my all-round UNIX, Linux, Web and Database skills ensure I can pay the bills and keep a roof over my head.
When I am not working, I enjoy flinging my huge beast of a 2004 BMW R1150GS Adventure around the country lanes at, ahem, let us say, sensible speeds and walking the beautiful countryside, usually in a dreamworld of my own!
For the rest of my time, I maintain and improve my IT skills by installing, configuring and maintaining Linux & Solaris servers, provide bespoke scripting solutions (bash, korn, perl) and design and install web-sites and associated services using the latest tool-sets (Dreamweaver, XHTML, PHP, Javascript, CSS.) And yes, I know my way all the way around Apache
And as a final arrow in my quiver of skills, I reckon I’m a pretty good teacher and mentor, able to patiently handle the most obtuse of desk-top users as well as write top-quality documentation. An all-round top-quality experienced IT Administrator with enough experience to be useful in a number of diverse roles.
As for the photo, when I was younger, fitter, tougher (or more stupid!) I liked to leap out of aircraft. In fact I liked it a lot. Before that, I was a keen caver and after that I took to flying small aircraft – but that was, I’m afraid, too expensive a hobby to keep up. Next on my list of "must do before I die" ambitions is to be able to sail, preferably at a transatlantic level of competence and skill. But owning a boat is a no-no – I have been well informed about how much of a money-pit owning a boat is, no matter how desirable the prospect! Unless perhaps I win the lottery!
